For this, you all may received messages asking you to complete “e-KYC Process”. So to help you, here we come with a simple guide to complete your e KYC HDFC ERGO process.
What is HDFC ERGO e-KYC?
KYC stands for “Know Your Customer”. It is a way of checking who you are and where you live. HDFC ERGO describes e-KYC as the digital version of this check. It covers personal identification and address verification for all customers. You do not have to visit an bank office or submit paper forms, as everything can be done online.
Why has it become compulsory?
The insurance regulator IRDAI has issued a directive. According to HDFC ERGO’s website, e-KYC is now mandatory for all new and existing policyholders. The KYC norms apply to policies bought on or after 1 January 2023, and they cover health, car, travel and other policies.
Why is it important?
- Smoother claims: HDFC ERGO says that completing e-KYC makes claims and servicing seamless. If your KYC is already on record, the insurer does not need to hold up your settlement to collect these details later.
- Buying and renewing: Health insurance guidance from the company warns that existing customers who have not submitted KYC documents may not be able to renew or purchase a mediclaim policy.
- Fraud prevention: The rules are meant to make sure the right person gets the policy and to reduce fake or fraudulent activity.
Who needs to do it?
According to the company, the policy proposer and the premium payer must complete the e-KYC process. In simple terms, it is the person who takes the policy and pays for it.
Is Aadhaar compulsory?
No. HDFC ERGO’s own guidance says Aadhaar is not mandatory. You can submit other valid identity and address proofs if you do not wish to use it. Accepted identity proofs include a PAN card, voter ID, passport and driving licence. For address, you can use proofs such as a utility bill, rent agreement or bank statement.

- Log in using the proposer’s name and mobile number.
- Start e-KYC using the proposer’s PAN or Aadhaar number.
- Answer a few Customer Due Diligence (CDD) questions.
- Generate the e-KYC ID. You can also view the e-KYC ID verification.
Step 2: Link the e-KYC ID with your policy
- The portal shows your e-KYC linking status.
- Select the policy that is not yet linked.
- Enter the proposer’s PAN card number or e-KYC ID, then click “Link”.
- If you have several policies, the linking has to be done for each policy separately.
This last point is easy to miss. Many people create the e-KYC ID but forget to link it with all their policies.
Other ways KYC can be done
Besides the online route, KYC can also be done through:
- Aadhaar-based verification, either online or offline.
- OTP on your Aadhaar-registered mobile number. You enter this code in the online form to complete the process.
- Central KYC (CKYC), under which you complete KYC once and can use it across banks, insurers and other financial institutions.
- A physical KYC form, if you prefer paper. HDFC ERGO has a downloadable KYC application form for this, which follows the Central KYC Registry format. It needs self-certified copies of your documents.
How to check your e-KYC Status?
The Self Help portal shows your e-KYC linking status, which tells you which policies are already linked and which are pending. Log in with your name and registered mobile number to see it. If a policy is shown as “not linked”, select it and link your e-KYC ID or PAN right away.
If you want to confirm your broader KYC record, you can check its status on a KYC Registration Agency (KRA) website using your PAN. The usual statuses are “Validated/Registered”, “Under Process” and “On Hold/Rejected”. “Under Process” usually means the update is still being handled and can take a few days. “On Hold” often means your mobile number or email has not been verified.
What you should keep ready?
- PAN card or Aadhaar number
- Mobile number registered with your policy
- Address proof, if you are not using Aadhaar
- Your policy number(s)
Tips and cautions
- Use only the official website. Complete e-KYC only on HDFC ERGO’s official site or app. Do not share OTPs or Aadhaar details with callers, or through links sent on WhatsApp or SMS from unknown numbers.
- Do it before renewal. Finishing KYC early avoids last-minute problems when your premium is due or when you need to file a claim.
- Update after changes. If your address or other details have changed, update your KYC.
- Aadhaar consent is voluntary. Insurers must tell you that submitting Aadhaar is optional and that other methods exist. Aadhaar numbers and core biometrics are not meant to be stored or shared except as the law allows.
If you face a problem
If your status does not change or the linking fails, contact HDFC ERGO customer care through the number or email listed on its official website, or use its app. If your issue is not resolved, you can raise it with the company’s grievance team and then with IRDAI.
e-KYC is a one-time task that can be completed from your phone, and it keeps your policy and claims running without delay. Policyholders who have not yet done it should log in to the HDFC ERGO Self Help portal, generate their e-KYC ID and link it with every policy.
Note: Rules and portal steps can change. Please check the HDFC ERGO website for the latest process before you begin.
